Rosie’s Alibi was the first racehorse I ever owned shares in.

At the beginning, it was exciting. I got to follow her training, watch her develop, and experience a world I had only ever seen from the outside. Rosie was talented, too. Her sire is Justify, and she eventually became a stakes winner, and on paper, hers could easily look like a success story.

But the longer I was part of her journey, the more complicated that story became.

There were injuries. Problems with her esophagus. And then there was repeated instances of EIPH.

Each time something happened, the conversation seemed to come back to whether Rosie would still be able to race.

“Don’t worry, she can still run.” was the main message they would send to shareholders.

It was meant to be reassuring.

But I remember sitting with that and thinking, why is that the thing we’re worried about right now?

I wasn’t thinking about her next race. I wanted to know what life could look like for Rosie if we stopped measuring everything by whether she was still capable of performing.

That experience stayed with me.

At one point, Rosie was given time away from racing, about eight months of turnout and recovery. When I saw a photo of her, I almost couldn’t believe the difference.

There was something in her face that hadn’t been there before. She looked softer. Different. Like a horse who had finally been given the space to simply be a horse.

That was in 2022, and that photo opened a door I’ve never really closed.

It made me question how often we ask horses what they can still do before we ask what they need.

It changed the way I thought about racing, recovery, retirement, and our responsibility to horses once the job we gave them is finished.

And in many ways, those questions helped shape Willow’s Way.

Rosie is why Thoroughbred aftercare will always be personal to me.

Every horse deserves the chance to come out the other side of their career with time, care, dignity, and people willing to invest in the life that comes next.
